The Border Artists
For those who think that our regional artists are simply regional, we urge them to rethink their premise. Joyce Macrorie is a sterling example of just how well trained and well rounded our artists are. While she earned her Masters of Fine Art in painting from the Cranbrook Academy of Art, she did independent study on both painting and printmaking in Germany, followed by more printing making at Nez Perce Workshop. She served as a jeweler’s apprentice in Oaxaca, Mexico, studied metal forging at Western Michigan University and graphics at a workshop in Santa Fe, NM.
And while doing all of this, she served as a Professor of Humanities at Western Michigan University, was an art reviewer for the Kalamazoo Gazette and participated in group art exhibitions in El Paso, Las Cruces and Santa Fe in recent years.
As a tribute to her versatility and high degree of talent, she has had multiple one person shows at the Running Ridge Gallery in Santa Fe, the Waxlander Gallery and the Munson Gallery, both also of Santa Fe, the Joyce Petter Gallery in Saugatuck, MI, the Malton Gallery in Cincinnati, Oho and the Fiber Arts in Metal exhibition at Western Michigan University.
Her work is found in numerous collections including: the US Embassy in La Paz, Bolivia; Chicago Art Institute; University of Michigan; Detroit Institute of Arts; IBM; Kalamazoo College; Chicago Cable Company; Mountain Bell and Kaiser Aluminum.
